Welcome to a
new financial year with your local Chamber of Commerce. Now that
the AGM is over for another twelve months the committee, consisting of some of the original members carrying
over as well as the addition of some new enthusiastic members. I
would personally like to welcome the new committee members, Andy,
Daryl, Murray and Andrew; between us all we will represent the
Chamber well. I also would like to thank our local councillor Ted
Shepherd for his involvement at the AGM and allowing us to use his new
office for our first committee meeting, a perfect venue for a
professional meeting.

In the political arena, with the
formation of the new NLP I feel changes are imminent from both
parties. In the national arena it is pleasing to see Malcolm
Turnbull elected the new leader of the Liberal Party a switched on
man deserved of this roll. Tania and I had the privilege of being
involved in an open forum with Anna Bligh this week, a positive
evening with ideas being extracted for all walks of life, to be
reviewed before the big picture is completed. It is pleasing to
see that enthusiasm is alive and well with all businesses full of
activity considering the Global economy at this point in time.

One of our aims through the
Chamber is to produce a monthly newsletter; this will be in a
smaller format allowing us to keep members closely informed of
changing situations as they arise. It is advisable for everyone to
constantly check your emails as there is useful information being
sent out almost daily. Some of this information can be taken on
board for future implementation, other material may be discarded
if is not significant to your situation. We feel that keeping the
chamber more active this year will satisfy members that they are
fully informed of situations locally, nationally and globally. We
need to keep each and every member up to speed weather the effect
on your businesses could be negative or positive outcome.
Whichever way you will be able to adjust your individual ideas to
be progressively active throughout 2009. Terry Hobson PRESIDENT

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
This was held at Breakfast on 22 nd August, 2008. Another lovely
breakfast at Woodchoppers, thanks Woodchoppers. Terry Hobson was
re-elected as President, with John Forester as Vice President.
Trish Bridgement was also re-elected unopposed as Secretary, she
does a wonderful job and we would be lost without her. We have a
few new faces on the committee too – Andi Fiske, Murray Duthie and
Daryl Greer, along with previous committee members, Maree Mills,
Tania Wright, John Preston and Arlene Dowdell. We look forward to
some fresh ideas with some new faces.

Our speaker for breakfast was
John Preston who is President of the Combined Chambers of
Commerce. His topic was to be a comparison of light rail and buses
but became focused on the light rail when it was the mode of
transport adopted overnight and appeared in the Bulletin that
day.(Much to Ted Shepherd’s surprise). It was great to see how it
will look and work with an amazing, realistic looking presentation
of both options up and running around the Gold Coast.
